Gardens SOTA – A 21st Century Educational Choice

August 28, 2014
Choice in education is a beautiful thing. Where families have a choice of academic programs, there is the impetus for positive change and improvement for students.

Gardens School of Technology Arts, a K-8 charter school in Palm Beach Gardens, is an excellent example of choice in education, offering a unique academic learning environment coupled with the stability of a sound core curriculum program. Gardens SOTA is not simply an alternative location in which to receive a standard public school education. This charter school opened with a specific mission and vision to provide innovative tools in a cooperative learning environment that fosters creativity and problem solving throughout the school day, which vision they continue to develop and implement as they enter their fourth year.

Gardens SOTA emphasizes the four “C”s of 21st Century Learning: Critical Thinking, Collaboration, Creativity, and Communication. The academic focus is three fold: (1) to infuse invention and innovation into the school culture; (2) to infuse excitement in the classroom by setting high standards for teacher performance, and (3) to increase academic expectations for all students.  Gardens SOTA students do not simply learn academic lessons; they build life skills.

In addition to core academic periods with technology infusion intrinsic to the learning process, the schedule at Gardens SOTA includes quarterly tech arts initiatives such as digital art, animation, and keyboarding for younger students; and robotics, gaming design, coding, website and media literacy for older students, plus a variety of other creative technology components. Students also receive PE and music/chorus as part of the regular schedule.

Collaboration between home and school is a key component of success in education. To position students for success requires effort and cooperation from teachers, parents and the students themselves. The vision of Gardens SOTA has always been to develop a small, tightly-knit school community all working toward the same goals. Families with a desire to partner with this innovative program, seeking an opportunity for their students to learn, explore, invent and create, are invited to experience Gardens School of Technology Arts!
