Fireworks are not the only fabulous thing invented in China. A very long time ago the Emperors of China would enjoy snow ice cream. A mix of snow and ice from the mountains combined with fruit, honey and/or wine made a delicious treat for the rulers. Are you wondering how the cold confection made it’s way from China to the United States? Here’s a little history on it’s wonderful journey around the world:
- In 1295, Marco Polo returned to Italy from China with the recipe for snow ice cream. His recipe called for mixing yak milk into snow. This creamy mixture of milk, snow, and ice caught on quickly and soon the wealthy all over Italy were enjoying frozen milk.
- Catherine de Medici of Florence, Italy married French king, Henry II and brought with her the recipe for frozen milk. It did not take long for the cooks in France to begin making the fabulous treat.
- Charles the I of England visited France and took the delicious desert back to England where the elite dined on this creamy delight.
- Governor Bladen of Maryland, originally from England, served ice cream to his guests and seventy-six year later, New York City opened the first ice cream parlor.
- In 1903, Italo Marchiony, a man who sold ice cream from a cart he pushed through the streets of New York City, patented his idea for a pastry cup that could hold ice cream. He invented the waffle cup because he was tired of people walking off with or breaking the glasses he used to serve ice cream from his pushcart.
